Darwin School of Ballet
by Julia Quinn
(Darwin, NT, Australia)
The Darwin School of Ballet was founded by Madame Lily Vita in 1975.
The school is now run by one of her students, Lisa Heath, who maintains the philosophy behind the formation of the studio: strong focus on technique, discipline, moderate class sizes and encouragement of students to develop to their full potential as well-rounded dance enthusiasts.
Studio teacher, Julia Quinn and resident choreographer, Joanna Noonan also trained under Madame Vita. Other studio teachers are Sharrynne Glover, Michele Dott and Trudi Thomas.
The Darwin School of Ballet offers Cecchetti classical ballet classes for children 5 years of age through to adults. Our training in ballet involves annual exams with an interstate examiner and a holiday dance program with an interstate Cecchetti representative. Our performance work includes hip hop, Pacific Island dance, Bollywood and contemporary genres. We aim to engage both local and national dance artists where possible to provide the best opportunities for our students. To showcase and celebrate the hard work of our dancers we hold either an informal showing of work or a large-scale concert at the end of the year. We also engage in local community performance opportunities such as the Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival and cultural events.
Some of our past students are currently studying at recognised and respected dance institutions: Victorian College of the Arts, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Sydney Dance Company Pre-Professional Year and the Queensland Dance School of Excellence, and dancing with Australian Dance Theatre, Bangarra Dance Theatre and Tracks Dance.
